Located 2 km from Thiruvalla town it is the largest temple of Kerala. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. At the entrance there is a 50 feet long granite flag post with an idol of Lord Vishnu with Garuda.
History: The name Thiruvalla is originated from the word Thiru Valla Vazh which is the old name of the river Manimala. This town is situated on the mouth of this river so it was named after it. It is one of the 108 Vishnu temples of India and is a major center for Vaishnav followers. In earlier times this shrine guided a Vedic school with thousand students. Some historical evidences are also found in this place suggesting the traces of ancient civilization. Besides that there was also a famous market named Kaavil market which was a major trading spot for foreign traders in old times.
Architecture: The influence of traditional Kerala architecture can be seen on the building. It is built on a large premise with beautiful rock carvings and ancient murals. This shrine was built during the Christian era and has long corridors made of granite. They reflect the rich and fine architectural style of that time. There is also a large tank which people believe is a natural spring.
Festive Traditions: According to an ancient tradition woman devotees are not allowed in this temple. But during the festive celebrations of Vishu and Thiruvathira they are allowed to enter the religious place. Vishu is celebrated in the months of Feburary- March while Thiruvathira is celebrated in March- April. During these festivals this place is in full swing. Also in the evening Kathakali dance is performed. It is believed that Lord Vishnu watches these performances from his holy abode
